What is period underwear? (or "washable absorbent underwear", "menstrual underwear")
Sisters Republic period underwear is underwear that looks and feels just like normal underwear, but better because it is made of high-tech fabrics that allow you to go through your period without the risk of leaks or odours, or even the feeling of dampness. Though they look just as nice as your usual lingerie and are almost as thin (between 2 and 3 mm thick max), there is integrated hygienic protection at the crotch. You won't be able to see it, and you can almost not feel it, but rest assured, there are 2 to 3 thin layers of highly absorbent and waterproof fabric hidden in there (depending on the level of absorption you have chosen):
- ultra-absorbent, antibacterial cotton that quickly drains the liquid inside and wicks away surface moisture, preventing any odour or feeling of dampness
- waterproof fabric (a mixture of cotton and polyurethane) that blocks the liquid and prevents leaks and stains
Comfortable and clean period underwear
Our period underwear is made of organic cotton for extra comfort down there, making sure there is no irritation or itching caused by synthetic materials. We had to use layers containing polyurethane, which is currently the only solution available to make a waterproof fabric. This protection does not contain harmful substances, and unlike tampons and sanitary pads, it does not expose you to the risk of toxic shock. Sisters Republic products are Oeko Tex certified, a label that guarantees the absence of material that is toxic to the body or the environment. The material is breathable and anti-bacterial: no risk of a bad smell in the middle of the day!
Our period underwear has multiple benefits compared to other hygienic protection. Because of how thin they are, they are much less noticeable than if you were wearing a pad, all while ensuring good moisture absorption. Even heavier flows are taken care of if you choose the right level of absorption. Depending on the level you choose, the lining of our underwear can absorb the equivalent of 1 to 3 tampons, whilst never exceeding 3 mm in thickness.
With our period underwear, you can go for up to 12 hours without the fear of leakage, odours or dampness. Just make sure you choose the right underwear for your flow! For example, try something with "Super" absorption if you are at the beginning of your period and/or if your flow is usually heavy. If you are at the end of your period or if you generally have a light flow, you can go for "Light" absorption, which will be less thick and therefore more comfortable. Finally, if you have a really heavy flow, we recommend using your period underwear in addition to other protection, such as a tampon or a pad just to make sure you are 100% protected.
